Navigating the O-Level Exam Schedule 2026: Your Definitive Guide to Success
- 8 min read

Which month does the O-Level start? Technically, June. But for most students, the real pressure probably arrived at the start of the year itself.
SEAB has released the latest examination calendar, and the key dates are now set. The O-Level exam schedule 2026 spans five months, from June to November. For Secondary 4 and 5 students, this timetable shapes everything: your revision blocks, your practical preparation, and your pacing through the final stretch of the year.
How will you use the months ahead to prepare?
Essential Overview of the 2026 O-Level Series
Here is the overall shape of the O-Level exam schedule 2026:
- Duration: Five months, beginning in June and concluding in November.
- Four Assessment Modes: Oral, Listening Comprehension (LC), Practical, and Written.
- Two Primary Phases: Mid-Year (primarily Mother Tongue) and Year-End (core subjects and Science practicals).
Administrative Timeline and Registration Rules
When to register for O-Level 2026? School candidates should have registered between Tuesday, 3 March and Thursday, 12 March 2026. Your school handles this process directly; you verify your personal details and subject combinations.
Key Deadlines
- Final Amendments: No changes to personal details or subject entries can be made after 3 July 2026.
- MTL Re-sit Policy: Students who sit for Mother Tongue in June can opt to re-sit in November, provided they completed the Oral and LC components during the Mid-Year window.
With registration closed, attention now shifts to the exam calendar itself.
Phase 1: Mid-Year Assessment Windows (June to September)
The Mid-Year phase marks the official start of your O-Levels. These months focus on Mother Tongue assessments: written papers in June, listening comprehension in July, and oral exams stretching into September.
Initial Written Papers (2 June)
The Mid-Year written exams focus exclusively on Mother Tongue Language (MTL) and MTL B Syllabus Paper 1 and Paper 2.
| Date | Subject | Paper | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday, 2 June | Chinese / Malay / Tamil | Paper 1 | 8:00AM |
| Chinese / Malay / Tamil | Paper 2 | 11:00AM | |
| Chinese B / Malay B / Tamil B | Paper 1 | 8:00AM | |
| Chinese B / Malay B / Tamil B | Paper 2 | 9:35AM |
Mid-Year Listening Comprehension (7 July)

The LC papers are scheduled for the afternoon, covering all major Mother Tongue languages.
Oral Communication Exams (13 July – 23 September)
English Language and Mother Tongue oral exams begin on 13 July. The oral examination period extends through to 23 September for B-syllabus candidates.
- 13 July: Higher Chinese, Higher Tamil, Chinese B, Chinese, English Language
- 14 July: Higher Malay, Malay, Malay B, Tamil B, Tamil
- 22 July: Malay (Special Programme), Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese (Special Programme)
- 31 July: Spanish, French, German, Japanese
- 23 September: Malay B, Tamil B, Chinese B
Your school will assign your specific date and time slot. Prepare for reading aloud and spoken interaction well before July.
Phase 2: Year-End Practicals, LC, and Final Written Papers
The Year-End phase is where the O-Levels intensify. Beginning in late September, students will face the Science practicals, Year-End listening comprehension, and the bulk of the written papers across all core and elective subjects. This is the stretch that determines their final grades.
Unlike the Mid-Year phase, which focuses on languages, the Year-End phase tests everything at once. Students may have a Chemistry practical on one day, a Physics written paper the next week, and Mathematics sandwiched in between.
Laboratory and Science Practical Assessments (22 September – 13 October)
Practical exams test hands-on experimental techniques and data analysis. These typically run in four shifts daily. Your school will inform you of your assigned shift at least seven days before each practical.
| Date | Subject | Duration | Focus Areas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuesday, 22 September | Music / Higher Music | 10 min | Performance |
| Tuesday, 30 September | Chemistry Practical | 110 min | Qualitative analysis, titrations, observation |
| Monday, 5 October | Physics Practical | 110 min | Measurements, electricity experiments, data interpretation |
| Wednesday, 8 October | Combined Science Practical | 90 min | Varies by combination (Phy/Chem, Phy/Bio, Chem/Bio) |
| Tuesday, 13 October | Biology Practical | 110 min | Microscopy, biological drawings, food tests |
- For Chemistry practicals, revise your qualitative analysis tables thoroughly.
- For Biology practicals, practise drawing biological diagrams with clear labels.
- For Physics practicals, ensure you are comfortable with common apparatus and data recording.
Year-End Listening Comprehension (14–15 October)
| Date | Subject | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday, 14 October | Spanish, German LC | 10:30AM |

Anticipating the O-Level Results Release
After the exams, the waiting begins. MOE has indicated that O-Level 2026 results will be released tentatively between Wednesday, 13 January 2027 and Friday, 15 January 2027.
Results are typically available from 2:00PM onwards, and students collect their results at their respective secondary schools.
After results are released, the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) opens for entry to junior colleges, Millennia Institute, Polytechnics, and ITE. It is best to prepare for different outcomes now. Results day is one afternoon, but the decisions about your next steps stretch over the following weeks.
Proven Five-Phase Study Strategy

With the exam schedule spanning five months, your O-Level preparation should follow a phased approach.

This is the time to lock in content knowledge before exam pressure sets in.
- Complete the syllabus for all subjects.
- Identify and close knowledge gaps early.
- Build a revision schedule that allocates time by subject difficulty.
- Begin light practice with topical questions.
2. May: Language Intensity
Your Mother Tongue written paper is weeks away. Shift your focus accordingly.
- Prioritise MTL composition practice and oral exam strategies.
- Practise reading aloud and picture discussion daily.
- Review common essay topics and oral themes from past years.
- Maintain light revision for other subjects to keep momentum.
3. Jun – Jul: Executing Phase 1
The first formal exams arrive. Balance active papers with continued preparation.
- Sit for MTL Written (2 June) and LC (7 July).
- Continue revising Year-End subjects alongside oral preparation.
