By the end of Secondary 2, choosing a Science combination can feel like deciding your entire future. It matters, but it does not lock you into one career at 14. The more useful questions are: Which subjects do you enjoy? Where are you performing consistently well? How much work can you realistically manage alongside Mathematics, Languages and Humanities?

Under Full Subject-Based Banding, students may take subjects at G1, G2 or G3, depending on their strengths and what their school offers. From the 2027 graduating cohort, these subjects will be examined under the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate. At G3, the Science options include separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects, as well as Combined Science pairings.

Your choice may affect which subjects you can take later, but do not rely on broad rules such as “Engineering means Physics” or “Healthcare means Biology”. Before any of that, though, comes an earlier decision: whether to take your Sciences pure or combined.

Evaluating Your Path: Pure Science vs. Combined Science

Before deciding between Biology, Chemistry and Physics, you need to consider how many separate Science subjects you want to take.

With separate G3 Sciences, often still called Pure Sciences, each Science is studied and graded as its own subject. Depending on your school’s available combinations, you may take two Sciences or all three as Triple Science.

This route covers each discipline in greater detail and gives you more Science subjects to manage. That means more lessons, practical work, revision and examinations across the two upper-secondary years.

Combined Science brings two disciplines together as one examinable subject. The available G3 pairings are Physics/Chemistry, Physics/Biology and Chemistry/Biology. You still learn content from both areas, but you do not take the complete standalone syllabus for each Science.

Combined Science is not simply the “easy” option. Students still need to understand concepts, interpret data, apply what they know and answer questions accurately. The main difference is the breadth of content and the number of separate subjects being managed.

Core Syllabus Breakdown: What Will a Student Learn?

Before you decide, look at what each subject covers over the two upper secondary years.

1. Pure Biology (The Life Sciences)

Biology is the study of living organisms and how they function. It calls for a strong memory, the ability to connect ideas across topics, and clear written explanations, since many marks come from describing processes correctly.

Secondary 3 covers cell structure, the movement of substances, nutrients, enzymes, respiration, excretion, homeostasis, and nutrition and transport systems in both plants and humans. Secondary 4 moves into coordination and response, cell division through mitosis and meiosis, reproduction in plants and humans, inheritance, molecular genetics, and ecology.

The challenge with Biology is the amount of content. The ideas themselves are manageable. What is demanding is recalling and explaining all of it correctly in the exam.

2. Pure Chemistry (The Central Science)

Chemistry deals with what matter is made of, how it is structured, and how it reacts, and it combines calculation with conceptual understanding. That mix is part of why so many students keep it in their combination.

Secondary 3 covers kinetic particle theory, measurement and purification techniques, atomic structure, chemical bonding, acids, bases and salts, the identification of ions, oxidation and reduction, and the mole concept with stoichiometry calculations. Secondary 4 covers energy and enthalpy changes, speed of reaction, the periodic table, metals and the reactivity series, electrolysis, ammonia, air quality and the environment, and a full introduction to organic chemistry, including alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, carboxylic acids, esters, polymers, and isomerism.

If you are comfortable switching between a calculation and an abstract idea, Chemistry might suit you well.

3. Pure Physics (The Physical Sciences)

Physics deals with the rules behind matter, motion, and energy. It is the most mathematical of the three and the most analytical, which makes it a good fit for students who like solving logical problems.

Secondary 3 covers measurements, scalars and vectors, kinematics, forces and dynamics, mass, weight and density, turning effects, pressure, energy, work and power, light, general wave properties, and the kinetic particle model and thermal properties of matter. Secondary 4 covers sound, the electromagnetic spectrum, static and current electricity, D.C. circuits, practical electricity, magnetism, electromagnetism, electromagnetic induction, and radioactivity.

If maths is a weak spot for you, Physics can look intimidating, since a lot of it revolves around formulas and calculation. The Maths itself is fairly basic and repeats across topics, so working on the specific skills you keep getting stuck on tends to bring your Physics grade up with it.

Once you know what each subject involves, the choice comes down to your strengths, your interests, and where you want to go after secondary school.

  • Medicine, healthcare, or the life sciences: consider Biology and Chemistry. Together they build the vocabulary and the organic chemistry foundations that health and medical courses rely on.
  • Engineering, computing, or the physical sciences: consider Physics and Chemistry. They develop the mathematical problem-solving that most of these courses expect, and many also want a solid grounding in Additional Mathematics.
  • Still unsure: Chemistry keeps the most options open. As the central Science, it combines practical calculation with conceptual reasoning and is required for the widest range of STEM courses, which gives you time to decide as your interests become clearer.

Whichever combination you go with, the jump from lower secondary to Pure or Combined Sciences is a real step up in terms of both volume and difficulty, and the first term of the academic year is usually the hardest to settle into.
