Why Choose Combined Science Tuition with TLS Tutorials

Secondary 3 is when the pressure on Science students increases sharply. Combined Science requires students to master two distinct disciplines simultaneously, each with its own concepts, terminology, and requirements for answering. Students who struggle at this stage usually do so not because they lack ability, but because they have not been given a structured way to organise their knowledge or apply it under exam conditions.

In school, large class sizes make it difficult for teachers to consistently address individual gaps. Many parents find it hard to pinpoint exactly where their child is falling behind, and without targeted support, those gaps compound as the O-Level year approaches.

At TLS Tutorials, our Combined Science tuition is designed to address this directly. Before any lesson is planned, our tutors take time to understand each student’s specific weaknesses, learning habits, and answering patterns. Lessons are then built around what that student actually needs, aligned to the MOE syllabus.

Our Meta-Cognitive Learning Approach helps students become more aware of how they think through Science questions. Instead of passively receiving content, students learn how to organise concepts, recognise question demands, and choose a suitable response method. This gives them a more reliable way to manage their chosen Science combination across Sec 3 and Sec 4.

Combined Science Tuition Syllabus

O-Level Combined Science is taken by upper-secondary students who study two Science disciplines within one subject. The available combinations are Physics/Chemistry, Physics/Biology, and Chemistry/Biology. The syllabus develops scientific literacy, critical thinking, and the ability to apply concepts in real-world and examination contexts, and is aligned with MOE’s Science Curriculum Framework, which is built around inquiry, innovation, and inspiration.

Combined Physics

  • Measurement
  • Newtonian Mechanics
  • Thermal Physics
  • Waves
  • Electricity and Magnetism
  • Radioactivity

Combined Biology

  • Cells and the Chemistry of Life
  • The Human Body – Maintaining Life
  • Living Together – Plants, Animals and Ecosystems
  • Continuity of Life

Combined Chemistry

Key features of the O-Level Combined Science syllabus:

  • Tests both content recall and the application of concepts to unfamiliar, real-world scenarios
  • Assessed through multiple question formats, including structured questions, data-based questions, and practical components

Students need a method to organise what they know, interpret what is being asked, and apply the right concepts accurately under exam conditions. This is what our combined science tuition in Singapore is designed to develop.

The TLS Tutorials’ Metacognitive Learning Approach

At TLS Tutorials, our Meta-Cognitive Learning Approach applies three core principles to every tuition session your child attends for Combined Science:

Stage 1: Recall and Access

Stage 1: Recall and Access

Students organise key concepts, definitions, and processes from their chosen Science combination. This helps them retrieve the right information when moving between Physics, Chemistry, or Biology topics during practice.

Stage 2: Interpretation and Analysis

Students learn to identify what is being tested, interpret graphs and experimental data, and apply the right concept in context, directly addressing one of the most common reasons marks are lost in O-Level Science.

stage-2-interpretation-and-analysis
Stage 3: Framework Application

Stage 3: Framework Application

Students are trained to write clear, well-reasoned answers using frameworks aligned to O-Level marking requirements, connecting concepts effectively so their knowledge translates into performance.

Structured Skills Development and Exam-Focused Training

Our Combined Science tuition equips students with subject retention techniques and exam answering skills, building the confidence they need to perform in their O-Level Biology, Chemistry, and Physics papers.

Focus Area

How We Develop It

Skills We Develop

Students learn to define scientific terms, explain biological and chemical processes, interpret data and diagrams, and answer structured exam questions with precision. They also build the habit of drawing connections across Combined Biology, Chemistry, and Physics topics.

How Lessons Are Run

Lessons blend concept delivery, guided questioning, visual notes, mnemonics, and exam practice. Educators pay close attention to the students’ thinking process, not just whether the final response is correct.

Examination Alignment

Lessons follow the MOE O-Level Combined Science syllabus and are structured around the question types and assessment formats students will face in their actual examinations, including school-based tests and the O-Level papers.

How Every Combined Science Lesson Is Structured

Every session at TLS Tutorials is run the same way, designed to build understanding progressively, address individual gaps, and keep students and parents informed throughout.

1. Diagnostic Check-In

Every student begins with an initial diagnostic assessment to identify topic gaps and answering habits. Follow-up diagnostics are conducted periodically to track progress and update lesson priorities.

2. Concept Building

Tutors introduce or reinforce concepts using targeted materials, guiding students to organise knowledge into a clear mental framework.

3. Guided Practice

Students work through exam-style questions with tutor support, focusing on recognising question patterns, applying the right concepts, and developing answering habits that hold up under exam conditions.

4. Interactive Discussion

With a maximum of four students per class, every session allows for discussion. Students ask questions freely, explore concepts, and learn from what their classmates raise.

5. Progress Feedback

After every lesson, tutors update each student's study plan and share feedback with parents through a dedicated WhatsApp group, keeping everyone informed on progress and next steps.

6. Half-Yearly Diagnostic Reports

Twice a year, students receive a comprehensive report mapping progress across all topics, giving parents a clear picture of strengths, persistent gaps, and upcoming adjustments to the learning plan.

FAQs About Combined Science in Singapore

Yes. Many Junior Colleges in Singapore accept students who took Combined Science, provided they meet their specific subject and grade requirements. It’s important to check the admission criteria for each JC directly, as prerequisites vary by course and institution.

With consistent study, a good understanding of core concepts, and regular practice of exam-style questions, Combined Science is manageable. It covers less depth than Pure Science but it still demands disciplined learning across two disciplines. Addressing gaps early and developing strong exam technique makes a significant difference to both pass rates and overall grades.

Combined Science is generally considered less in-depth than Pure Science, which some students find easier. However, “easier” is subjective. It still requires mastering two sciences, applying their concepts to different question types, and performing under exam conditions. How well a student does ultimately depends on their learning habits, the guidance they receive, and how early they start building a solid foundation.

We recommend starting Combined Science tuition in Secondary 3. Beginning early gives your child enough time to build a solid conceptual foundation, practise core skills, and address any learning gaps before the crucial O-Level year.

All combined science tuition sessions are conducted on-site at our centre near Newton MRT. We do not currently offer online tuition for this programme.

Combined Science is offered at the upper secondary level, specifically in Secondary 3 and Secondary 4, as part of the O-Level pathway. Students choose one of three science combinations: Physics/Chemistry, Physics/Biology, or Chemistry/Biology. The subject is examined at the end of Secondary 4 as part of the GCE O-Level national examinations.
