Evolution of Excellence: Decoding the New GEP Singapore Landscape

In 2024, Singapore embarked on a transformative journey in Primary School education, significantly updating the Gifted Education Programme (GEP).

Now, as we continue into 2025, these changes are taking full effect. The Ministry of Education has expanded access to tailored, high-ability programmes directly within local schools, moving away from the centralised model. This shift not only broadens the reach—encompassing 10% of all Primary School students, about 3,000 annually—but also diversifies the educational experiences available, catering to specific talents and strengths in various subjects. This evolution marks a pivotal moment in nurturing young talents across the spectrum, providing more students than ever with opportunities to excel in a supportive, enriching environment.

Timeline for Transition: When Will the Updated GEP Be Put Into Action?

The MOE initiated its transition to the updated GEP with the 2024 Primary 1 cohort. This shift integrates high-ability learning directly into all Primary Schools, evolving from the previous GEP that began in 2007, which had already introduced specialised programmes in subjects like English, Mathematics, and Science.

The final cohort under the old GEP system began their last traditional GEP year in Primary 3 in 2025 and will proceed to Primary 4 in 2026. Meanwhile, the students who entered Primary 1 in 2024 will be the first to experience the full scope of the revamped GEP starting in Primary 4 in 2027, aligning with MOE’s commitment to nurturing high-ability students within their community schools.

A New Structure: What Will the Future of the GEP in Singapore Look Like?

For one Singapore’s GEP will expand to serve approximately 10% of each Primary School cohort. This strategic shift aims to integrate high-ability programmes into all Primary Schools, ensuring gifted students can continue their education within their current school environments. This inclusive approach is designed to nurture a broader spectrum of students, fostering a culture of excellence and curiosity across the educational landscape.

Key Changes to the GEP Structure:

  • Expansion to More Students: The programme will now include around 3,000 students annually. This expansion allows more students to access tailored educational opportunities that challenge and engage them beyond the standard curriculum.
  • School-Based Programmes: Every Primary School will offer specialised programmes for high-ability students. This shift aims to keep students in their familiar learning environments while providing them with the resources and support needed to excel.
  • After-School Modules: For students demonstrating exceptional aptitude or interest, after-school modules at designated centres will be available. These modules will focus on extending students’ learning beyond the typical classroom topics and emphasise real-world applications.
  • Focus on Inquiry and Exploration: The GEP will encourage students to engage in projects and explorations that make learning relevant and exciting. For example, a student interested in Science might conduct experiments to understand different cooling methods or investigate sustainable practices in food production.

Curriculum Reimagined: Grasping the New GEP Curriculum

The revamped GEP curriculum in Singapore is engineered to nurture a passion for lifelong learning through a blend of independent inquiry, exploration, and interdisciplinary studies. By extending beyond traditional academic boundaries, the curriculum is designed to deepen students’ understanding and stimulate curiosity.

Key Highlights of the New GEP Curriculum:

  • Interdisciplinary Learning: Students will engage with a curriculum that encourages them to connect ideas across different subjects, such as Science, Mathematics, and the arts, promoting comprehensive understanding and versatile problem-solving skills.
  • Project-Based Learning: Shifting away from conventional exam-centric assessments, the GEP now emphasises projects that require students to apply their knowledge creatively. This approach helps develop essential skills in research, critical thinking, and practical application.
  • Diverse Assessment Methods: The new curriculum introduces varied forms of assessment, including dynamic presentations and continuous teacher observations. These methods aim to assess students more holistically, focusing on their process and understanding rather than just the outcomes.

Expectations and Preparation: What Can Students and Parents in GEP Anticipate?

As the GEP evolves, students are set to experience a more stimulating and collaborative educational environment. As mentioned, the revamped GEP fosters critical thinking and teamwork through project-based learning and interdisciplinary challenges, aimed at exceeding traditional academic pursuits.

Guidance for Parents:

  • Foster Open Communication: Regular discussions about educational experiences and personal feelings can help you gauge your child’s enthusiasm and any concerns they might have, ensuring they feel supported at every step.
  • Monitor Well-being: Stay attentive to your child’s mental and emotional health. The enriched curriculum, while beneficial, can be demanding. Balancing academic challenges with sufficient rest and recreational activities is crucial to prevent being overwhelmed and maintain a healthy school-life balance.
  • Engage with Educators: Maintain a proactive relationship with your child’s teachers. Understanding their academic progress and any challenges they face through consistent communication will enable you to support their learning journey effectively.
